What is Ortho K?

Ortho K, or orthokeratology, is a technique for providing improvement to vision. More specifically, Ortho K is a type of specially designed gas permeable contact lens. However, with this contact lens, you will only wear it overnight, not during the daytime. During the night time, the contact lens works to change the shape of your eye. This is not painful and most people do not feel discomfort from the process. In the morning, you should be able to see better without the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Ortho K does not last more than a few days, which is why you’ll need to wear the lenses frequently to maintain these results.

Why will Our Clarksville, Franklin, and Bowling Green Optometrists Prescribe Ortho K?

When you come in to see your optometrists in our Clarksville, Franklin, and Bowling Green optometry offices, we may make the recommendations for Ortho K. There are two reasons to do so.

  1. They can be used to correct refractive errors. This includes both nearsightedness and farsightedness. They can also correct astigmatism and hyperopia. We may recommend it for presbyopia as well.
  2. They can also be used to slow down the progression of myopia in children. Myopia, or nearsightedness, progresses from childhood. This may stop that progression to protect your vision.

How Does Ortho K Work for Improvement of Your Vision?

When you come in to our Clarksville, Franklin, and Bowling Green optometry offices, our optometrists provide a full eye exam to you. We’ll look at your vision screening results and then make a recommendation for Ortho K in some cases if your eyes are healthy.

The Ortho K lens fits over your eye much like a traditional contact lens. It has a unique fit to your eye that helps to gently reshape the cornea or the lens (outer portion) of the eye. You’ll place these into your eye before going to bed each night. We’ll teach you how to place them as well as how to care for them. In most cases, the effects of Ortho K should last for a day or two. We recommend wearing the lenses each night for the best results.

Is LASIK Surgery a Better Option?

LASIK vision correction surgery is an option for many people. However, it is not right for each patient. If you have very thin corneas or you have conditions such as diabetes or untreated (or impossible to treat) cataracts, you may be unable to have LASIK procedures. Those with corneal disease or autoimmune diseases may also not be able to have LASIK. In these cases, Ortho K provides a solution for those who do not want to wear eyeglasses or contacts each day.
